Kazakhstan Gas Infrastructure Expansion: UCC advances the next phase of BBS gas pipeline expansion

Kazakhstan’s gas sector is set for a major boost as Qatari contractor UCC advances a USD 2 billion program with QazaqGaz and Qatari Power International Holding, appointing ILF Consulting Engineers for FEED and detailed design on new pipelines and compressor stations.

United Cement Group (UCC), a Qatari company, is driving forward one of Kazakhstan’s largest midstream energy programs.

What’s new

On 30 July 2025, ILF Consulting Engineers confirmed its award for FEED and detailed design services covering 1,600 kilometers of new pipeline and six compressor stations.

This follows UCC’s December 2024 confirmation that it will deliver the EPC contract for client QazaqGaz, supported by Qatari Power International Holding. The overall program, includes gas processing plants and the second phase of the Beineu-Bozoi-Shymkent (BBS) pipeline.

Project overview

The Beineu-Bozoi-Shymkent pipeline expansion is a critical link in Kazakhstan’s gas supply strategy. By boosting capacity and reliability, the project will secure domestic demand and improve export flexibility into regional markets. In parallel, the Kashagan gas processing facilities will capture associated gas from one of Kazakhstan’s largest offshore fields, adding valuable feedstock to the national network.

The next phase’s scope, including 1,600 km of pipeline and six compressor stations, demonstrates the program’s scale and strategic importance. With investment levels expected above USD 2 billion, the development reinforces Kazakhstan’s ambition to strengthen its role as a regional energy hub and attract further international partnerships.

Why this matters for the supply chain

According to EPCIntel.com data and market intelligence, the main EPC contract between UCC and the client consortium of QazaqGaz and Qatari Power International Holding is already in place. ILF’s FEED and detailed design award is a signal of momentum and a precursor to major procurement and subcontracting activity.

Key opportunities for suppliers and contractors are expected in:

  • Pipeline steel and coating

  • Compressor station packages and rotating equipment supply

  • Civil, mechanical, and installation subcontracts for large-scale works

  • Manpower services covering welding, testing, and commissioning

  • Specialist support services in logistics, NDT, inspection, and maintenance

With UCC, a Qatari EPC contractor, delivering for QazaqGaz and Qatari Power International Holding, the scale of investment ensures that a diverse range of suppliers, including material providers and service companies, can expect tender opportunities as the project progresses.
