Global EPC giants submit technical bds for QatarEnergy LNG's COMP 5 offshore compression project

QatarEnergy LNG continues to advance its ambitious North Field Production Sustainability (NFPS) program with the highly anticipated COMP 5 Offshore Compression Project. This phase, one of the most technically complex and strategically significant undertakings in Qatar’s energy sector, has attracted a strong lineup of international engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractors.
According to industry sources, leading contractors submitting technical bids for the COMP 5 package will likely include:
1. Saipem
The Italian oilfield services major has been a consistent participant in Qatar’s offshore developments. Saipem was previously awarded the COMP 2 and COMP 3A/3B packages and would leverage its established regional presence and proven offshore expertise to pursue further scope under COMP 5.
2. McDermott
McDermott International, a long-time partner in Qatar’s energy sector, continues its pursuit of key contracts within the NFPS initiative. Having been involved in the COMP 1 package, McDermott brings a legacy of offshore EPCI excellence and experience in platform fabrication and installation.
3. Larsen & Toubro (L&T) – Energy Hydrocarbon (LTEH)
India’s L&T has quickly become a rising force in the Middle East offshore sector. The company was recently awarded the ultra-mega COMP 4 compression project, the largest contract in its offshore business history. Its momentum makes it a strong contender for COMP 5.
4. China Offshore Oil Engineering Company (COOEC)
COOEC, a major offshore contractor in Asia, has reportedly been shortlisted for several recent QatarEnergy LNG offshore packages. Its capabilities in large-scale topside and jacket fabrication make it a viable player in the COMP 5 bidding race.
5. PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC)
Vietnam’s PTSC, having previously partnered in the region, is also believed to be among the bidders. PTSC has increasingly positioned itself as a capable offshore contractor in both shallow and deepwater projects.
A Strategic Pillar in Qatar’s LNG Vision
The COMP 5 Offshore Compression Project forms a critical component of QatarEnergy LNG’s strategy to sustain and optimize production from the North Field—the world’s largest non-associated gas field. As reservoir pressure naturally declines, the addition of offshore compression facilities ensures continued gas flow to onshore LNG trains, preserving output levels and extending field life.
Beyond the EPC giants, the project is also expected to generate significant opportunities for regional and global supply chain players, including module fabricators, subsea cable and pipeline suppliers, compressor manufacturers, marine logistics providers, and offshore services companies. This creates a wide spectrum of industrial participation and local content development in line with QatarEnergy’s broader value creation strategy.
With a final contract award expected following a detailed evaluation phase, QatarEnergy LNG is on track to maintain its leadership in the global LNG market while driving forward the country’s long-term energy strategy.
